A helical piling is a circular, hollow, steel pipe section (shaft) with one or more tapered steel plates (helixes) welded to the shaft. The plates are shaped as a helix with a carefully controlled pitch, which allows the pile to be inserted into the ground with minimal soil disruption. The central shaft is used to transmit torque during installation and to transfer axial loads to the helical plates upon foundation loading. The central shaft also provides a major component of the resistance to lateral loading. The pile is directed toward the soil and mechanically rotated with constant downward pressure, advancing the pile into the soil. Once installed, the pile has bearing capacity in both tension and compression in the subsurface by transferring the structures load to the bearing stratum.
This work presents an automated pumped irrigation system implementation for a remote onshore isolated Indian area. The irrigation system is powered using a photovoltaic (PV) module. In this research study, the parameters such as solar irradiation, soil moisture content, availability of electrical load, etc. has been extensively taken studied for proper control. The irrigation system also uses a storage battery for storing and retrieving the energy available from the PV module and for supplying loads during lean periods or during the night time. An economic analysis for the scaled-up system is also performed to study practical setup of such a system. For the economic study, the system is considered to be set up in a remote onshore area in West Bengal, India near the eastern coastal region. Appropriate simulations backed by experimental studies on a laboratory-based model validate the proposed techno-economic study.
Non Destructive testing is an ideal approach for in-situ assessment of soils, subgrades and pavements. Portable Falling Weight Deflectometer and similar equipment such as German Dynamic Plate, Soil Stiffness gauge distinguished by load pulse rate and contact pressure are being widely used in stiffness determination. The stiffness modulus obtained through LWD & DCP testing on a flexible pavement and or by LWD & Schmidt's Hammer testing on a rigid pavement could be respectively correlated. Quality of field data establishes the reliability of the experiments. Such a correlation can be used to do away with the high cost of LWD and experience required to predict the required parameters for LWD using the results obtained from the other two devices.
This research work was carried out during summer 2017 at Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Anand Agricultural University , Anand. The present field trial consisting of 7 treatments with four replications. on the basis of present investigation, it appeared that soil application as per STV (Soil Test Value) or application of multi-micronutrient mixture (except Grade-I) were found significantly superior over control. Foliar application and soil application of multi-micronutrient mixture grades found comparable with STV indicated that chemical load can reduce without affecting the yield of pearl millet. Thus, the finding of the present study suggested that agronomic approach for yield and micronutrients concentration enhancement could be better accomplished by its supplementation through soil (basal) or foliar application (at 15, 30 and 45 DAT) of pearl millet.
Olive oil extraction processes generate three phases: olive oil, solid residue (pomace) and aqueous liquor (Olive Mill Wastewater OMW). OMW causes serious environmental deteriorations such as coloring of natural waters, alteration of soil quality, phytotoxicity and odor nuisance. The direct discharge of this effluent into the soil bring various negative effects on the environment, due to its high load of organic matter and phenolic compounds. Coagulation, flocculation and their combination processes are among the most applied processes for wastewater treatment. In the present work, recent research studies dealing with the application of coagulation/flocculation for removal of phenolic compounds and COD from OMW are presented and compared. Furthermore, the main factors that influence the selection between coagulation, direct flocculation and coagulation-flocculation are presented and the principal removal mechanisms are discussed.
