Ferrite is a class of magnetic material. Naturally occurring ferrite is the ferrous ferrite (Fe3O4) as "Load Stone". In early days it was considered as ferromagnetic material. But latter on L Neel realized that, material consists uncompensated anti parallel spin arrangement and hence named as "Ferrimagnetic material. Ferrite is a special class of Ferrimagnetic material having interesting intrinsic properties. Basically Farous ferrite Fe3o4 is having double oxides FeO & Fe2O4. The properties can be altered by substituting divalent iron ion by divalent cations from transition elements. Properties can be significantly modified by substituting trivalent iron ion by another trivalent cations. Ferrites are found to be technologically and commercially useful magnetic material. Due to highly electrically resistive and low magnetic behavior as well as negative temperature coefficient of resistance along with low magnetic loss ferrites can be used at high frequencies. They find applications in the fields like elecommunications, electronic industries, data storage & processing. Aluminum substituted Copper CuxAl2yFe2-2y ferrites are prepared to study structur, electrical & magnetic properties.

There is extensive work on the fracture of steel with ferrite and austenite structure, but little on fracture behaviour of ADI, whose microstructure also comprises austenite and ferrite. The present work is aimed in this direction. The role of austempering tempeature on the fracture behaviour of Ni-Mo austempered ductile iron has been studied. In present work, the fractographic and fractomicrographic features of the fractured specimens austempered at 270°, 330°, 380° C for 1 hr and broken in tensile test and impact test, respectively, have been studied. The matrix of ADI is a complex mixture of austenite, bainitic ferrite needles with or without carbide particle depends upon the austempering temperature. The matrix of ADI can withstand a certain amount of deformation before fracture during tensile or impact testing, however the graphite nodules in the matrix cannot deform and hence are barrier to matrix deformation and give rise to crack initiation. The crack propagation is influenced by the orientation of bainitic ferrite with respect to load direction, also by the presence of carbide particles inside the needles. Thus producing characteristic features.

High temperature corrosion problem in coal based thermal power plants has been matters of concern since the very early days of using the combustion of coals to raise steam to generate electricity. The problems could be separated into water wall corrosion, typically at temperatures in the range 350-450ºC and super-heater and re-heater corrosion, typically at metal temperatures in the range of 500-650ºC. Boiler tubes of coal fired thermal power plant subjected to prolong exposure at elevated temperature loose their load bearing capacity. The corrosion damage at inner and outer surface is responsible for reduction in wall thickness. In service water tubes from FBC boiler after a service life of ten years were collected. Failed tubes from FBC boilers were thoroughly investigated by visual inspection, cross-section and axial measurement, micrography and identification and characteristics of scale by XRD analysis to find the cause of failure. Main cause of failure was found to be corrosion with Fe2O3 as the main corrosion product. Other causes of boiler tube failure were short term overheating, erosion, decomposition of perlite into ferrite.

To produce functionally graded steels, two slices of plain carbon steel and austenitic stainless steels were spot welded and used as electroslag remelting electrode. Functionally graded steel containing graded layers of ferrite and austenite may be fabricated via diffusion of alloying elements during remelting stage. Vickers microhardness profile of the specimen has been obtained experimentally and modeled with artificial neural networks. To build the model for graded ferritic and austenitic steels, training, testing and validation using respectively 174 and 120 experimental data were conducted. The Vickers microhardness of each layer in functionally graded steels was related to the yield stress of the corresponding layer and by assuming Holloman relation for stress-strain curve of each layer, they were acquired. Afterwards, the stress-strain curves were modified by the load-displacement data achieved from instrumented Charpy impact tests.
