Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most widely grown vegetable in Pakistan and a means to earn valuable foreign exchange for the country. Microbial spoilage of onion is a major cause resulting in post harvest loss every year. In the present study, gamma radiation treatment was used to reduce the pathogenic microflora of Allium cepa L. hence increasing post harvest storage life. The major exported onion variety of Punjab (Desi Red) was selected for the study. The onion bulbs were irradiated at the doses of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 kGy at PARAS Foods, Lahore. Then the comparison of microbial populations of onion was made between control and irradiated samples. The impact of radiation dose on weight loss and organoleptic qualities of onion was also evaluated. The results revealed that gamma irradiation significantly affected bioburden, weight loss and organoleptic properties. Onion bulbs irradiated at the dose of 0.15 kGy showed minimum weight loss, reduced microbial load and preservation of organoleptic qualities of onions.
Colorectal cancer is second leading cause of deaths in the United States. Various approaches available for The poor site specificity of pH dependent systems, because of large variation in the pH of gastrointestinal tract, was well established. The timed-release systems release their load after a predetermined period of administration. These are designed to resist the release of the drug in stomach and small intestine and release of the drug takes place in colon. Methotrexate (MTX) is a used in the treatment of colon cancer and now a days rheumatic disease. MTX is a folate antimetabolite. MTX has since been used in the treatment of various malignancies including osteosarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, cutaneous T cell lymphoma, lung cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer. The conventional dosage forms which are used for colorectal cancer normally dissolve and absorbs in the stomach and small intestine, thus a very less quantity of dose of drug reaches to colonic region. Aim of present work is to develop and characterize colon targeted tablet of MTX for for treatment of colorectal cancer using different polymer and excipient by compression coating technology.
The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is an important food crop, grown largely as a carbohydrate staple and also for industrial purposes. Of the various physiological factors which affect potato storage, sprouting is the most obvious manifestation of deterioration. In the present study he potatoes were irradiated at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 kGy to inhibit sprouting and evaluate microflora. The experimental and control group of potatoes were analyzed for the microbial load and growth of sprouts. The remarkable reduction in bioburden was noted in the case of highest dose subjected to potatoes i.e. 0.15 kGy. The irradiated potatoes showed less viable microbial count than the non-radiated ones even after three weeks of irradiation. This study indicated that higher irradiation levels proved to be most effective in retarding the sprouting of potatoes stored at ambient conditions.
