While politicians and pundits endlessly debate immigration policy, US Border Patrol agents put their lives on the line to enforce immigration law. In a day's work, agents may catch a load of narcotics, apprehend groups of people entering the country illegally, and intercept a potential terrorist. Their days often include rescuing aliens from death by thirst or murder by border bandits, preventing neighborhood assaults and burglaries, and administering first aid to accident victims, and may involve delivering an untimely baby or helping stranded motorists. As Bill Broyles and Mark Haynes sum it up, "Border Patrol is a hero job", one that too often goes unrecognized by the public. Desert Duty puts a human face on the Border Patrol. It features interviews with 19 active-duty and retired agents who have worked at the Wellton, Arizona, station that watches over what is arguably the most perilous crossing along the border - a sparsely populated region of the Sonoran Desert with little water and summer temperatures that routinely top 110 degrees. The agents candidly discuss the rewards and frustrations of holding the line against illegal immigrants, smugglers, and other criminals - while often having to help the very people they are trying to thwart when they get into trouble in the desert. As one agent explains, "The thrill is tracking 'em up before they die. It's a rough ol' way to go - run outta water in this desert". The book is published by University of Texas Press. 1. Dublin, Ireland, 1780 Oliver Newman McKannah often had visions, but this one frightened him; flames always did. After watching his only family members perish in the burning apartment, 13-year-old Sean McKannah wandered along the waterfront, dazed and hungry, wearing the only items he owned. Befriended by Captain Patrick Olin Mullholland, a kindly man who had spent his life on the sea, Sean's life is forever changed. Get aboard, lad, y'must 'ave a home. Adventures the young Irishman had never dreamed of were about to begin. Prior to his second visit to Yerba Buena, soon to be renamed San Francisco, Sean had visited the Orient, Australia, and many other seaports to load or offload merchandise. As a young man, Sean watches as Captain Mulholland's ship, Sea Duchess, sails out of San Francisco harbor. A chance meeting with Frank, a Spaniard his age, sets the stage for greater adventures: trapping in the mountains, mustangs in the desert, deadly encounters with killers, and more. Meeting Frank's sister changes Sean's life more than any other event. 1. Language: English. Narrator: J Rodney Turner. Existing buildings greatly impact the environment through energy use, water consumption, embodied carbon, and carbon emissions necessitating either demolition or retrofit. One of the most important factors affecting the energy performance within a building is a carefully and efficiently designed facade. The concept of double skin facade comes in which explores, systems configurations, cavity depths, glazing types and orientations. Through the use of the dynamic thermal modelling simulations, it is realized that, that a multi-story Facade, depending on its configuration, save up to 5% on annual cooling loads respect to a Corridor Facade and while vented can save unto 12% on annual cooling load in the maritime desert climate. Thus, with an optimum configuration of the Double skin facade from single skin facade or glass curtain wall, saves an overall annual cooling load of 32%.
This book describes how to optimize and to obtain the best performances of photovoltaic water pumping systems (PVWPS) by using simulation based on experimental data. We have presented a mathematical motor-pump model for PV applications which allow us to contribute in the studies of PV pumping sizing. The modeled motor-pump characteristic is flow rate-power (Q, P). The nonlinear relation between flow rate and solar power has been obtained experimentally in a first step and then used for performance prediction. The model proposed enabled us to simulate the electric and hydraulic performances of helical pumps versus the total water heads for different PV array configurations. The goals of the experimental work done in desert environment for a deep well are: - Selection of optimal combined PVWPS configuration in term of cost and demand of the load. - Determination of the effect of pumping head on PVWPS using the optimum PV array configuration, adequate to supply a DC Helical pump with an optimum energy amount, under the outdoor of desert environment. The best system efficiency has been obtained for the head of 80 m. We recommend the use of SQF submersible pump for a deep head.

The Todd River is an ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory, central Australia. The origins of the Todd River begin in the MacDonnell Ranges, where it flows past the Telegraph Station, almost through the center of Alice Springs, through Heavitree Gap at the southern end of Alice Springs and continuing on for some distance, passing through the western part of the Simpson Desert, as it becomes a tributary of the Hale River, and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia. The indigenous Arrernte people know this river as Lhere Mparntwe (pronounced ler-ra m-barn-twa). The Todd is in a very arid part of Australia and has zero to very low flow during 95% of the year. When it does flow, it carries a heavy sediment load picked up from the grazing land around the Bond Springs homestead which lends its waters a milky chocolate colour and renders them completely opaque.

'In the first nineteen months of European war, from September 1939 to March of 1941, the island nation of Britain and her allies lost, to U-boat, air, and sea attack, to mines and maritime disaster, one thousand five hundred and ninety-six merchant vessels. It was the job of the Intelligence Division of the Royal Navy to stop it, and so, on the last day of April 1941 . . .” May 1941. At four in the morning, a rust-streaked tramp freighter steams up the Tagus River to dock at the port of Lisbon. She is the Santa Rosa, she flies the flag of neutral Spain and is in Lisbon to load cork oak, tinned sardines, and drums of cooking oil bound for the Baltic port of Malmö. But she is not the Santa Rosa. She is the Noordendam, a Dutch freighter. Under the command of Captain Eric DeHaan, she sails for the Intelligence Division of the British Royal Navy, and she will load detection equipment for a clandestine operation on the Swedish coast-a secret mission, a dark voyage. A desperate voyage. One more battle in the spy wars that rage through the back alleys of the ports, from elegant hotels to abandoned piers, in lonely desert outposts, and in the souks and cafés of North Africa. A battle for survival, as the merchant ships die at sea and Britain-the last opposition to Nazi German-slowly begins to starve. A voyage of flight, a voyage of fugitives-for every soul aboard the Noordendam. The Polish engineer, the Greek stowaway, the Jewish medical officer, the British spy, the Spaniards who fought Franco, the Germans who fought Hitler, the Dutch crew itself. There is no place for them in occupied France; they cannot go home. From Alan Furst-whom The New York Times calls America's preeminent spy novelist-here is an epic tale of war and espionage, of spies and fugitives, of love in secret hotel rooms, of courage in the face of impossible odds. Dark Voyage is taut with suspense and pounding with battle scenes; it is authentic, powerful, and brilliant.
