The bark canoes of the North American Indians, particularly those of birch bark, were among the most highly developed of manually propelled primitive watercraft. Built with Stone Age tools from materials available in the areas of their use, their design, size, and appearance were varied so as to create boats suitable to the many and different requirements of their users. The great skill exhibited in their design and construction shows that a long period of development must have taken place before they became known to white men. The Indian bark canoes were most efficient watercraft for use in forest travel; they were capable of being propelled easily with a single-bladed paddle. This allowed the paddler, unlike the oarsman, to face the direction of travel, a necessity in obstructed or shoal waters and in fast-moving streams. The canoes, being light, could be carried overland for long distances, even where trails were rough or nonexistent. Yet they could carry heavy loads in shallow water and could be repaired in the forest without special tools. Bark canoes were designed for various conditions: some for use in rapid streams, some for quiet waters, some for the open waters of lakes, some for use along the coast. Most were intended for portage in overland transportation as well. They were built in a variety of sizes, from small one-man hunting and fishing canoes to canoes large enough to carry a ton of cargo and a crew, or a war-party, or one or more families moving to new habitations. Some canoes were designed so that they could be used, turned bottom up, for shelter ashore...
Excerpt from The Wind in the Garden The boat-loads of people returning from that fun eral were streaming past M. Lerot´s garden. It was a wonderful garden, willow-wound and water-dip ped, where hyacinths tangled and green things leaned over and the sun shone down; but each man in passing kept his boat clear of it as from a thing of fear. Madame Rigone lifted her paddle from its steering and pointed discreetly toward the old shack on the farther shore. This little book may be considered as unique, among a huge list of fishing books, that load the shelves of sporting goods stores. What is it offering different, from hundreds of other books with similar subjects, is the direct text, that will guide the reader where to fish, when to fish, and how to fish. A considerable space was devoted to fish behavior, for most game species, and also for some other kinds of fish, less desirable. That can improve anybody´s angling performance, just by knowing how to apply this book´s contents to the local conditions. There are no secrets in finding your own niche, no matter where you fish: from the shore or from a boat. The key is persistence. Any fish lives by responding to impulses, memorizing the conditions that lead to food, while avoiding unnatural conditions which signal alarm. If an angler can read those signs, every outing will be successful. This Freshwater Fishing digest is meant to help anyone in this respect. Good Luck! ungekürzt. Language: English. Jillias Man Regained continues the Jillia romance (2nd book of series). After Char and Jillia have lived together for several years, Char exits their wilderness home, intent on finding the promised village. He walks away with Jillias words vividly alive in his head: Go find your world, find your purpose in life, plant roots, and gain your fortune. I want this for you! When you have done these things, come back for me. Char travels toward the village of Mahama. First attacked by a group of fierce little men, he rebuffs their attack, makes friends, and travels to their village. There a tall socialite lures him; their romance develops. Her homely mother recruits him to install a system to bring fresh water from the river to a pumping station. However, before the job begins, a freak accident plunges him into the river. Downstream, a woman and husband rescue him, carrying his battered body to their home where she heals him. Bizarrely, her husband moves out, labeling Char as man of the house. Her love develops until she becomes pregnant and dies. Dejected, Char departs to seek Samishs village. He reaches Mahama and prospers until convicted of consorting with spirits of the dead. His penalty: work in the frigid water, farming kelp. Pursuing an idea to augment the villages only alcoholic drink, Char returns to the giant tree where he once camped and loads an oxcart with pears for fermenting brandy. On the way back, he diverts to Jillias home site and finds it damaged beyond repair. Sitting alone and despondent, he feels arms wrap his shoulders and hears a soft voice whisper, Oh god! Sweet Char, crying like a big baby! Little does Char know how these words will change his life as he develops the brandy business, becomes the High Priests spy, launches Mahamas first boats in centuries, fights partisan battles with the Pious, engages in a ménage à trois and ?
